Sometimes we pray for new while desperately trying to hold on to the old.
New opportunities. New relationships. New peace. New beginnings. A new version of ourselves.
But when God begins to change things, we become uncomfortable because the new doesn’t always fit into the life we’ve grown accustomed to.
Jesus said:
“Neither do people pour new wine into old wineskins… No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.” — Matthew 9v17
In biblical times, new wine continued to expand as it fermented. An old wineskin had already stretched and hardened; putting new wine into it could cause it to burst.
And sometimes, so can we.
We ask God for growth while holding onto old habits.
We ask for healthy relationships while chasing people who have repeatedly shown us unhealthy patterns.
We ask for peace while continuing to entertain the very things that disturb it.
We ask God to make us new while insisting that everything around us remain exactly the same.
Maybe the problem isn’t that God isn’t answering.
Maybe the new wine has arrived, but we’re still trying to pour it into an old wineskin.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” — 2 Corinthians 5v17
Growth requires room.
Sometimes God will change your circle. Your priorities will shift. Things you once tolerated will begin to bother you. Conversations you once enjoyed may no longer feed you. You may even find yourself becoming uncomfortable in places where you once felt completely at home.
That doesn’t always mean something is wrong.
You may simply have outgrown the wineskin.
And perhaps that’s why some relationships, habits, and seasons have been falling away.
Not everything that leaves your life is a loss.
Some things simply cannot accompany the person you are becoming.
So stop trying to squeeze your new self into old spaces just because they’re familiar.
Stop shrinking to maintain relationships you’ve outgrown.
Stop returning to what God delivered you from simply because the unknown feels uncomfortable.
“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?” — Isaiah 43v19
If God is doing something new, give Him room to do it.
New wine.
New wineskin.
New mindset.
New boundaries.
New relationships.
New season.
And perhaps, a new you.
