Have you ever watched someone walk away from a situation believing they had won?
Maybe they hurt you, betrayed you, lied about you, or left you carrying the pieces while they seemingly moved on without consequence. And for a moment, you wondered, “God, did they really get away with that?”
But I’m learning something: not every battle requires my response.
Sometimes the victory is in being quiet enough to let God handle what I cannot.
“The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.” — Exodus 14v14
We often think winning means having the last word, proving our side, or watching the person who hurt us receive what we think they deserve.
But God’s justice doesn’t need our assistance.
And His version of victory may look very different from ours.
“Do not take revenge… for it is written: ‘It is mine to avenge; I will repay,’ says the Lord.” — Romans 12v19
There comes a point when you have to stop watching to see what happens to the people who hurt you and start paying attention to what God is doing in you.
Maybe they thought breaking you would destroy you.
But you healed.
Maybe they thought losing them would stop you.
But you grew.
Maybe they expected you to remain where they left you.
But God had other plans.
Psalm 2v4 gives us a striking image:
“The One enthroned in heaven laughs…” — Psalm 2v4
Not because God takes pleasure in our pain, but because human plans can never overthrow His sovereignty.
So don’t spend your life trying to prove that you won.
Heal.
Grow.
Move forward.
Let God write the rest of the story.
Because sometimes the greatest response to what tried to destroy you is becoming everything God intended you to be despite it.
They may have thought the story ended when they hurt you.
But they forgot they weren’t holding the pen.
